The Princeton University Golf League (PUGL) is a friendly-competitive league for Princeton University and Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) faculty, staff, students and affiliates. Playing 9 holes each week, two-person teams square off in a head-to-head match play competition. Each match is handicapped so you do not need to be a pro-golfer – frankly most are far from it. However, to keep matches balanced and engaging, two skill-based flights have been established – A and B Flight. While comradery, merriment, and being able to play golf each week are our primary goals, winning is still important. Rankings are tracked and awards are given for individual and team triumphs.
Key information pertaining to the league are below:
League Type: Co-ed
Handicaps:
A Flight – handicap < 12
B Flight – handicap > 12
Cost: $50 league dues plus greens fees each week (of approximately $20)
Subs: Not sure if you want to join full time? That is OK, join the league as a sub. This is a great way to learn about the league, play with someone new almost every week, but not feel guilty that you can’t make many of the matches. There is a need for subs almost every week! You are not eligible for any of the awards or prizes as a sub, but the fee is only $35.
Dates: Matches are played each Tuesday afternoon from late-April through the end of August. Playoffs are held the two weeks following Labor Day.
Tee Times: 4:00pm – 4:40pm
Courses: The league plays at two courses, with flights rotating play between the courses each week:
Hopewell Valley Golf Course
Mountain View Golf Course
Currently the by-laws limit each flight to 18 teams. While there is still room in each flight, returning members will be given preference when registering. If interest surges above the 36 team slots, we will considering adding a third flight, allowing the league to further differentiate skill level.
